Shea butter and Jamaican Black Castor Oil are two of my favourite natural ingredients to use in DIY body care products as they both provide so many benefits to skin and hair.
Shea butter, fat that has been extracted from the nuts of the African Shea or Karite tree, is a natural emollient that is readily absorbed by the skin. It is hydrating therefore it promotes softer and more supple skin.
It is used in the cosmetic and medicinal industries as it has a high percentage of unsaponifiables which have been shown to have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This butter is purported to have been used by Cleopatra of Egypt and has been found to be in use since around A.D. 100.
My other favourite, Jamaican Black Castor Oil or JBCO, has been a steady part of my life since 2010 when I embarked on a ‘hair journey‘ to take better care of my hair – today, I am still a faithful user of this product.
Not only do I use it on my hair and scalp, but I also use it religiously on my skin daily to remove makeup, seal in moisture after a shower, and of course, I sometimes use it in my soaps.
JBCO is a humectant, drawing moisture from the air so it moisturizes the skin. It also has anti-microbial properties that help in the fight against ailments like acne and eczema.
I absolutely love Jamaican Black Castor Oil and I have been loyal to the Topic Isle Brand for the quality of their products.

So, without further ado, here is your recipe to make this body butter. This recipe yielded enough whipped body butter to fill two 4 oz jars.
Note: The following measurements are by weight using a digital kitchen scale that can measure a minimum of 0.1 grams and 0.01 ounces.
DIY Body Butter with Jamaican Black Castor Oil
Ingredients
- 5 oz Shea Butter
- 1.2 oz Grapeseed Oil
- 12 grams Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO)
- 1/2 teaspoon Rose Clay
- Few drops of Lavender Essential oil (optional)
Directions
Place your shea butter in a double boiler on low heat and allow it to start melting.
When it is about halfway melted, remove it from the heat and let it continue melting with the residual heat from the bowl. This is to avoid overheating.
Add the grapeseed and Jamaican Black Castor oil to the melted shea butter. Stir to blend the oils, then add the rose clay powder.
Stir well to dissolve completely.
Put the bowl in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes to allow it to cool and set a bit. Use a spoon to stir it up and mix the textures. As you may be able to see below, the edges set up while the center was still liquid underneath.
Add a few drops of lavender essential oil for fragrance. This is optional.
Next, using the hand mixer, blend the mixture for about 3 minutes to achieve a fluffy whipped butter texture.
Place your body butter into clean dry jars, cover and store in a cool dry place.
This body butter works well on extremely dry skin and has a shelf life of up to six months.
For extra moisturization, apply to slightly damp skin after a shower to seal in the moisture and keep skin soft throughout the day.
It is also great as a foot cream on dry cracked heels at night paired with socks.
