Today we are exploring the world of DIY Turmeric Face and Body Scrubs, inspired by the time-tested beauty traditions of India. Also known as haldi, hardi and manjal, turmeric is valued not only for its culinary and medicinal properties but also for its ability to rejuvenate the skin.
The wisdom of these skincare traditions has been passed down through generations, and now we can harness the power of this treasured gem to achieve radiant skin and a healthy glow.
What is a Body Scrub?
A body or facial scrub is a skin care product that contains granulated particles that are gently abrasive on the skin. The purpose of the scrub is to exfoliate or ‘scrub’ the skin to remove impurities and dead skin cells that naturally build up on the skin’s surface.
In addition, makeup, dirt and environmental pollutants can cause clogged pores and blemishes which leave skin looking lifeless and dull. Exfoliation sloughs off the impurities on the surface and leaves the skin clean, smooth and glowing.
This ancient beauty practice dates back to civilizations like ancient Egypt and Greece, where materials like pumice stones, sand, and sea salt were used to brighten complexions and promote skin rejuvenation.
In the Caribbean, the traditions of our ancestors have taught us to use specific natural exfoliants that thrive in our tropical climate. Some of these exfoliants include luffa (also called torchon or loofah), sand (particularly for rough, calloused feet), cornmeal, coconut and coconut husk, coffee grounds, papaya, sea salt, and sugar.
Benefits of Turmeric and Sugar for the Skin
Before we delve into the recipes, let’s explore the benefits of using turmeric combined with sugar in our body scrubs.
Studies have shown that turmeric has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties, making it ideal for fighting free radicals, calming irritated skin and keeping away harmful bacteria. Additionally, turmeric’s wound-healing properties may help improve discolouration and treat blemishes and acne.
Sugar acts as a gentle exfoliating agent to slough off dead skin cells and impurities to improve the texture and appearance.
The combination of these two ingredients creates an effective body scrub that will leave skin feeling refreshed and renewed!
DIY Turmeric and Aloe Vera Sugar Scrub
In addition to turmeric and sugar, this recipe includes:
Aloe vera gel – rich in nutrients and amino acids, it also helps to soothe and hydrate the skin.
Extra virgin coconut oil – softens and seals moisture in the skin. If you do not have extra virgin coconut oil, you can use regular coconut oil or you can make your own at home.
Lavender essential oil – for a calming and relaxing experience.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons turmeric powder
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons aloe vera gel
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin coconut oil
- 3-4 drops lavender essential oil (optional)
Directions
First, gather your tools and ingredients.
In a clean bowl, measure the turmeric powder.
Next, add the granulated sugar.
Mix the turmeric and sugar together to combine.
Add the aloe vera gel, coconut oil and lavender essential oil (if using).
Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
Place the scrub into a clean, sanitized jar with a lid.
Recipe 2 – Turmeric Face and Body Scrub with Honey
Honey contains enzymes that help with the exfoliation process. It also has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Honey is also a natural humectant which means it attracts and retains moisture that will help to further hydrate the skin.
Olive oil is rich in vitamin E and antioxidants, which help to protect and nourish the skin.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons turmeric powder
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon olive oil
3-4 drops lavender essential oil (optional)
Directions
Follow the method described above.
How To Use Turmeric Face and Body Scrubs
Before using the scrub, cleanse the skin with warm water to help soften and prepare the area for exfoliation. Gently massage the scrub on the skin in circular motions for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, avoiding the eyes and sensitive areas. Allow the scrub to sit for 3 to 5 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and pat your skin dry with a towel.
Apply body oil or lotion to keep your skin hydrated.

Precautions
Turmeric can temporarily stain your skin, so do a patch test on an inconspicuous area such as inside your arm before using it on your face or body. A patch test is also necessary, especially if you have never used turmeric to determine if you may be allergic to it. In addition, avoid the scrub touching fabric as it will stain and may not be easy to remove.
Storing Your Turmeric Face and Body Scrubs
As this scrub does not contain a preservative to prevent the growth of bacteria, I would advise storing it in a clean sealed jar in the fridge. Use it within two weeks and discard any that remains.
Also, use a clean utensil such as a spoon to take the needed amount out of the jar to avoid introducing bacteria into the scrub.
Scrubs containing coconut oil may solidify in the fridge. Warm it up between your palms before using it for better application.
How Often Should You Use the Scrub?
The frequency of using the scrub will depend on your skin type. Excessive exfoliation can irritate your skin so do not use it more than twice a week, even less if you have sensitive skin.
Always be mindful of your unique skin needs and consult with a qualified healthcare professional or dermatologist for personalized skincare advice and recommendations.
So, if you’re looking for a natural alternative to commercial store-bought products to exfoliate and brighten your skin, you should definitely try one of these effective and nourishing Turmeric Face and Body Scrub recipes. It will surely enhance your skincare routine.
