Have you ever tried a coffee scrub? If you haven’t, you are in for a treat!  Infused with the mighty power of caffeine, this scrub is a wonderful addition to your beauty routine that will leave your skin soft, luminous and rejuvenated.

DIY scrubs can be an inexpensive alternative to store-bought products which may contain harsh chemicals and synthetic preservatives. Creating your own allows you to customise your products to your preferences while harnessing the goodness of nature’s bounty using staples found in our kitchens.

Coffee scrubs are trendy because they are easy to make and highly effective at sloughing away dead skin cells, revealing a fresher, smoother complexion. However, their use in skincare is no novel idea as some historical records suggest that coffee was used for beauty in ancient Ethiopia, the Ottoman Empire and the Mayan civilization, to name a few.

In this blog post, we will create an indulgent coffee scrub that can be used for the face and body.

Benefits of Coffee in Skincare

Coffee is not just a morning ritual, it is a remarkable skincare ally. The caffeine in coffee stimulates blood circulation enhancing the delivery of essential nutrients and oxygen to the skin. Its anti-inflammatory properties can soothe irritation and protect skin cells from dying prematurely due to oxidative stress.

Coffee is also packed with potent antioxidants, flavonoids, fatty acids and nutrients such as riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), magnesium, and potassium.

The fatty acids in coffee can help to plump up the skin by boosting collagen, which may help reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Coffee is also known for:

  • Anti-ageing benefits
  • Tightening of the skin
  • Removing impurities
  • Reducing the appearance of cellulite
  • Reducing hyperpigmentation

This divine recipe also includes moisturizing coconut oil, soothing honey and sugar for additional exfoliation. Vanilla extract and vitamin E oil are optional but add an antioxidant boost to the recipe, while the vanilla also provides a pleasant, calming fragrance.

How To Use Your Coffee Scrub

Patch Test

Perform a patch test to ensure that you have no negative reactions to the coffee scrub.

Choose a discreet area of your skin, such as behind the ears or the inside of your arm. Clean the chosen area and apply a small amount of the scrub, leaving it on for about five minutes before washing it off. Monitor the area for 24 to 48 hours for any signs of irritation, redness or itchiness. These may indicate sensitivity to the product.

If you do not experience any reactions, the scrub may be safe to use.

Face

For use on the face, wet the skin first and gently massage a small amount of the scrub onto the skin in circular motions, avoiding the eye area. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

Body

In the shower, apply the scrub in the desired area on damp skin while massaging in circular motions. Focus on areas that need extra exfoliation such as feet, elbows and knees. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry.

Avoid using more than once or twice a week as over-exfoliating can cause irritation.

This DIY coffee scrub is an easy recipe to make and can be a great way to achieve smoother, more radiant skin.
