I always marvel at the learning systems, resources, tools and apps that are available now compared to my own school days.

Children today are part of the information age and there are so many opportunities for learning online through various media.

As a mom of two young boys, I am constantly on the lookout for fun and interactive ways to help my children to learn. I was particularly pleased when I was introduced to the Read With Phonics app.

Disclosure: I was given this app by the creator in exchange for my honest review.

Read With Phonics is an educational, fun and colourful app to teach children how to read.

Backed by scientific study, it promotes learning phonics through games that show how to decode words using the 44 sounds of the English language, also known as phonemes.

Imagine your child looking forward to learning phonics!

The app consists of four ‘worlds’ for your child to explore:

  1. Water World,
  2. Forest World,
  3. Lava Land and
  4. Jelly City

Each world teaches a set group phonemes and uses them in words through a series of 7 or 8 games that get progressively harder.

It is very interactive where your child has to select letters that make a certain sound, drag and drop letters to create words and choose words to match pictures, among other activities.

The completion of every sound within the world unlocks a new sound.

A great feature for parents is the ability to see which letters and sounds may be challenging for your child as well as those that he/she has mastered. Therefore you can return to the challenging sound until your child has a better understanding.

Then there is Albee, the little green alien, to give children support and encouragement along the way – a personal cheerleader. This is one of my son’s favourite parts of the app and he giggles when Albee does.

What I especially appreciate about the app is that it was created by Sophie Cooper, a primary school teacher in England with real-world experience working with children in a learning environment.

Personally, I am happy with the interaction that my three-year-old son has with the app. It is easy for him to navigate on his own, is entertaining and he definitely enjoys this method of learning phonics.

I also love that there are no ads and it can be used offline without an internet connection.
